The Beginnings

The old Sagana Resort was a dream turned into reality by Susan and Gerry Degan and Naoki Nakata, who met on Siargao island as tourists in 1995 and decided to open one of the first resorts on the island in 1999-2000. Gerry and Susan ran Sagana as a labor of love and with a lot of personal flair and care for all their guests. The resort came to be known for its peaceful vibe, fantastic cuisine, prime location, and welcoming hosts.

A New Adventure: Alon Siargao

After almost 20 years of taking care of friends and guests in Sagana, the Degans decided to sell the property in 2017. In November 2017, they turned over management and operations of the resort to their friends, Luigi and Luli Bernas, who started out as frequent guests at Sagana from the mid-2000s. Luigi ended up proposing to Luli in 2008 right on Cloud 9, with assistance from Gerry and Susan and 15 local and international surfers who were in town for a surf competition!

As Alon Siargao, the resort will continue to strive for the excellent customer service and delicious cuisine it has been known for since the beginning.

Alon at Cloud 9

The word “alon” means “wave” in Filipino, the national language of the Philippines. Luigi, Luli and their partners felt that this was the best way to convey their love and respect for the world-renowned surf break at Cloud 9 right at the resort’s doorstep, and for the people of Siargao island. It is the wave that enthralls Siargao’s visitors; it is the wave that has become a big part of the local community’s life; it is the wave that entices others to get to know the local community and culture.
